Lars Vilks

I think Hermione mentioned Lars Vilks in one of our discussions during a class. Unfortunatly his blog, where he daily discuss his controverse opinions about art, is in swedish so I thought to link you some info about his work. His is mostly known for his work -Nimis- which resulted in a judicial process since 1982. Nimis is a large scale wooden structure that he started to build in 1980. It's built straight on a shore in a nature reserve in southern Sweden without allowance. Today, thirty years later, Nimis has become a part of his micronation called Ladonia and is an well known tourist attraction.

Typical for Lars Vilks' art is the use of society as a battleground for his art. His most recent work dealed with the cultural issues caused after 9/11, the 'swedish way' of dealing with cencorship and 'political correctness' by letting a newspaper publish a caricature of Muhammed as a dog. The drawing has been referred many times and extremely hard to exhibit in Sweden. It has also resulted in life threats from al-qaida and other islamist groups.

Merry Christmas!!
