Lars Vilks

I think Hermione mentioned Lars Vilks in one of our discussions during a class. Unfortunatly his blog, where he daily discuss his controverse opinions about art, is in swedish so I thought to link you some info about his work. His is mostly known for his work -Nimis- which resulted in a judicial process since 1982. Nimis is a large scale wooden structure that he started to build in 1980. It's built straight on a shore in a nature reserve in southern Sweden without allowance. Today, thirty years later, Nimis has become a part of his micronation called Ladonia and is an well known tourist attraction.

Typical for Lars Vilks' art is the use of society as a battleground for his art. His most recent work dealed with the cultural issues caused after 9/11, the 'swedish way' of dealing with cencorship and 'political correctness' by letting a newspaper publish a caricature of Muhammed as a dog. The drawing has been referred many times and extremely hard to exhibit in Sweden. It has also resulted in life threats from al-qaida and other islamist groups.

Merry Christmas!!

Vulpes Vulpes

If any of you were going to Vulpes Vulpes tonight, please note the entrance is on Prout Rd, not in the alleyway to my Unit. Prout Rd is between the roundabout and the Jag Garage. Walk around and it'll be obvious where it is.

An opportunity

Please email r.j.jones@csm.arts.ac.uk the complete proposal form which needs to be completed and returned to him no later than the 11th December. Information on the opportunity is as follows: www.csm.arts.ac.uk/window-gallery.htm

We are looking for four students who want an opportunity to work at Flat Time House with unprecedented access to its archive and with the archive at Central St Martins. You will develop a self-initiated project which will culminate in a display in the Window Gallery on Charing Cross Road in February 2010. Applications will be accepted from all current CSM students. John Latham was one of the most important British artists of the post-war period. His work spanned painting and sculpture, performance and film, theoretical writing and social agitation, from the 1940s until his death in 2006. Latham is embedded in the history (and mythology) of Central Saint Martins, infamous for his iconoclastic activities with students, his ‘happenings’ at Better Books, and his involvement with the Artist Placement Group, a groundbreaking project positioning artists in industry and government. His former home in Peckham, Flat Time House, is renowned in the area for its street facing window sculpture. It is now open as a gallery and research centre, exhibiting the work of Latham, his contemporaries and artists whose work relates to his Time-base theories. Latham's archive is kept in the house and is subject to ongoing research and digitisation.

something to see

Go to the Visible Invisitble: Against the Security of the Real show at the Parasol Unit... Cecily Brown paintings, Hans Josephson brass casted sculptures, really amazing portraits by Maaike Shooerl among a few other artists.

From the press release :

"The exhibition Visible Invisible: Against the Security of the Real focuses on the work of four painters and one sculptor, all of whom take on the challenge of creating works that fall somewhere between figuration and abstraction. None of the works represent perceived reality; rather they each constitute a world of their own. While the inspiration and resulting creativity of each artist is distinctly different, seen together these works share an indisputable material presence and exhibit an intriguing dynamism that requires an active dialogue with the viewer."

john baldessari interview

Really interesting interview with John Baldessari. his current exhibition (at Tate Modern till January) is very good. as follows---

' The Los Angeles-based artist John Baldessari (b.1931) made his name as a pioneer of conceptual art in the 1960s with his text and image paintings. After cremating most of the work he had produced between 1953 and 1966, he began to make photographic works, often incorporating film stills, as well as videos, many of which have become icons. At the forefront of his imagery has been an interest in written and visual language, and his status as a teacher is legendary. But where did it all come from? Here, he talks to the curator of Tate Modern's forthcoming retrospective of his work. '

HERE
3 shows that I thought might be of interest over the holiday period.
