Hey guys

I had a start looking around for places this eve and got some starting points for down south to see what kind of spaces people like???

the Bear in Camberwell is pretty nice but quite small maybe a little too small but I think i'd be able to get a cheap price on it above a busy nice pub

The old police station in Deptford is pretty swish from the sound of it, 60£ a day for 2 weeks (maybe too long) includes 4 cells and interview room. Has some nice character! maybe too much character? Also has 42 artist studios which increase likelihood of arty folk we don't know seeing the work.

Also theres the bun house in Peckham which is quite famous but a bit of a crack den, is never open and doesn't have a website but its well known...

Also I emailed a community art council lady about getting an abandoned space or something but she always takes ages to reply so I'm still waiting on that. (could be a while!)

I agree with Caroline on another meet soon!!

Hi everyone (anyone who still reads the blog)

Thought by way of Christmas greeting send you a couple of pics of my snowman-efforts on Saturday..."Alfred" (so named as half way through making he looked like Alfred Hitchcock) and a 7 ft tall cat a group of us made...a bit like Koons' puppy I thought. We had to build a ramp to roll the head up it was so heavy!

Am hopefully going to tick off one of those 'you should do this once in your life' type things—build an igloo.

On Wednesday 10th November over 50,000 students and education workers marched through central London: the biggest protest for education since Margaret Thatcher tried to introduce tuition fees in 1985. On Wednesday 24th students are walking out and demonstrating in a day of civil disobedience.

Funding cuts and fees of up to £9000 will burden students with debts of up to £50,000. The message from the Con-Dem government is clear: education is for the privileged only. We must fight for the principle: education is a right, not a privilege. Fund our future.

Current students may also be affected by staff cuts, fewer resources and a decline in quality of teaching.

The government claims cuts are a necessity while banks propped up by public funds rake in profits and pay out billions in bonuses and Britain’s highest earners have been allowed to dodge up to £40 billion in tax payments through a government agreement with Swiss banks. The cuts are an attack on all but the most privileged members of society, and on the public services that we rely on. Unite to fight the cuts.

Anyway, let's cheer up. There's this great Wolfgang Tillmans show at the Serpentine which closes on Sunday 19th. I've already seen it but I'll be going again. Maybe see you there.

I really enjoyed this year's RCA sculpture show. One of the criteria when they select future students is to represent a broad spectrum of what's going on in sculpture and maybe that's the reason why the show felt really diverse in materials and concerns. There was a bit of institutional critique (the guy who broke one of the walls of the building). There was performance and video. There was bronze. There was foam and wax and silicone and crap and glossy kitsch paint. There was construction. Interactive pieces. Machine-making. Secret narratives. Non-narrative. Simplicity. Complexity.

I would like to invite you and your students to a closing event and artist talks for our latest exhibition called Where Beats This Human Heart in a WWII air raid bunker in Dalston, this Wednesday 23rd June. The exhibition is open throughout the day from 2pm with the closing event from 6.30pm and the artists talks from 7pm.

The Bunker is situated on Abbot Street, behind the Print House and Cafe Otto (18 Ashwin Street).

The leaflets have been printed and delivered--they look great, except for a colouring issue with Jana's photo, but the printing company has promised to do what they can to amend the situation and send corrected copies in time.

I quite like the 3d block but more as the depiction of an object and not a map, The 2d maps work much better...!

Also we should try to direct the flow of the viewers in the building, somehow inform them where to go and where they are.

I remembered last year that I didn't know where to go, I felt I missed a lot of rooms because it was so hard to understand the building. I was completelly lost!

Maybe we could think about ways to do this? through a poster, or arrows, signs.... not in our room, but in the floor...I don't know

It was hard for me to relate the MAP with the 3D, when combined it just didn´t look as a map neither a 3D thing, so I decided to separate the elements,

1. MAP, keeping it simple, hand-made, as we talked yesterday.

2- 3D, show the sculpture studio as a SOLID BLOCK, a PIECE by itself.

Hey guys. Thanks to all who came out for our discussion today.

We have decided to make a 12 page A5 booklet--3 artists per page, with a little guide to the exhibition in the front.

Also, we have named it "State of Sculpture" and decided on the cover, to draw our room as if it were a map (See the photo of quick sketches)--3 dimensional, with maybe a line running from door to door like a river--the idea is that it looks like it's own state. It'll be something simple. No words, just lines.

Two things:

If you object to any of this, speak up soon--it is being sent to the printers Wednesday morning.

If you want to do the drawing for the cover, POST IT ON HERE no later than 4PM tomorrow (Tuesday).

Speak now or forever hold your piece.

SOMETHING AT THE RAG FACTORY - invitation to exhibit.

Clay Mohrman, CSM foundation student in Product Design pathway, has been organizing for the last months an Exhibition (after the foundation one).
He reserved one of the rooms in amazing place, called The Rag Factory, http://www.ragfactory.org.uk/, which is just off Brick Lane.
I am helping him with the organization of the show, which is going to take place Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 of June. (Friday 18 whole day of hanging).
The space is really interesting, hidden behind what looks like a warehouse entry, it´s really big and kind of non gallery really, since the walls are convered in tiles and electricity cables are going around, the lighting is going to be set for the show, it´s a space that is generally used for theatre shows and performances.

The invitation to exhibit is open to anyone who has the desire of doing it. The space is limited, of course, but there is not curation or selection of work, it´s just about the willing to show.
Some confirmed participants come from Chelsea 1st year BA, The Ruskin 1st year BA, and all around our foundation course.
I informally talked to some of you, but I would love to invite everyone in the sculpture team to join and come and show what we like doing.

As we have no sponsors (yet), we are all paying 35 pounds for the 3 days of renting the space,
We are planing on having some live bands playing at evenings, and of course a nice party, which in any case youll be invited!

The Curve

10 June 2010 - 12 September 2010

The internationally-acclaimed, Berlin-based artist John Bock is renowned for his surreal installations combining performance, sculpture and film. Drawing on an idiosyncratic range of interests, Bock creates an absurd amalgamation of references from the disciplines of economics, fashion, film, politics, philosophy and music, among others.

In Bock’s installation a modified mobile home lands like an alien space ship in the middle of The Curve, where it docks with parasitic structures suspended from the ceiling. These make-shift architectural structures house various enterprises: a pub, a noodle restaurant and shops. Resembling a utopian, plug-in city constructed of found materials and handmade elements, the installation alludes to the original plan for the Barbican’s Frobisher Crescent which was to include a shopping arcade one level above The Curve. Live performances by Bock and other actors periodically animate the installation and can be viewed on screens in the gallery.

Shōjo manga, or romance comics for teenage girls, is an extremely popular and prominent genre of comics in Japan. This genre is characterized by a very dense visual style, including flowery backgrounds and big-eyed, androgynous boys and girls. Why is this genre so appealing to girls? Where did it come from? And why do so many of the stories feature androgynous characters or even homosexual romance?

This talk will give an overview of the history of shōjo manga, from its origins in 1920s and 30s girls' magazines, to the "revolution" of women writers in the 1970s. The main focus will be on the development of shōjo manga’s distinctive visual style, using as a primary example Ikeda Riyoko's 1972 hit The Rose of Versailles, which has been called the "shining masterpiece of shōjo manga."

From Latin crāpula (“‘intoxication’”) from Ancient Greek κραιπάλη (kraipalē), “‘intoxication, hangover’”).

Following his appearance in a group show with 20 Hoxton Square Projects in 2007, British artist Henry Hudson returns to the space to present a new body of work “CRAPULA”.

Described by Richard Dorment as ‘an astonishing young painter’, Hudson uses incongruous media, such as children’s plasticine or clumps of human hair, to explore moral and social decay in Britain. He has already established a strong voice and marked visual identity, with an ironic tone embellished by his use of peculiar materials. As the rebellious Hudson delves into London’s dank and dreary underbelly, the reality that seeps out is one of humour and horror, depravity and comedy. Hudson is blessed with a Hogarthian wit and satirical eye, and with it he constructs a provocative consideration of what it means to be British today.

Donyale Luna pour Future Essence Pure Coconut Oi

Artist Danielle Dean is looking for help for a project in Brixton Market. The project space is an off-shoot of 198 contemporary arts and learning.

Danielle is restaging her work called "Donyale Luna pour Future Essence Pure Coconut Oil" which was launched as a window display at Central St Martins in January 2010 and has been shown since at Tate Modern.

Danielle is offering the opportunity for motivated students who are interested in developing their skills in installion and throughout the project. She is looking for students who are willing to offer creative input and take on the responsibility for working 'front of house' during the period of the 12th June till the 20th. Working hours flexible but paid only in coconut oil.

This is a great project and Danielle is a very friendly and motivated emerging artist who is developing a growing interest in her work both here and internationally. This would be especially useful for people who are local to the area but that is not essential.

Parasol unit is delighted to present the first solo exhibition in London devoted to the work of the Japanese artist Tabaimo. Since her graduation from art school in 1999, Tabaimo’s innovative and large-scale animated drawings have been extensively shown to major critical acclaim, both in Japan and internationally.

Tabaimo is known for her skilfully drawn and disturbing animations that mix imagery from contemporary
Japanese life with digital video technique. Throughout her eleven years of practice the artist has created
satirical works that often comment on modern life in Japan, and in particular on the way her own generation
attempts to reconcile the realities of today with traditional Japanese values. Tabaimo draws inspiration from a
variety of sources, not least from the media and her own personal experience. All animations are hand-drawn
by the artist and in their execution and use of colour they are perhaps inspired by traditional Japanese
drawings and prints. Tabaimo’s work pulsates with a sense of immediacy that invites viewers to respond to
them instinctively rather than react to them through acquired or preconceived knowledge.

The exhibition at Parasol unit is comprised of five video installations: Japanese Kitchen, 1999; hanabi-ra, 2003;
guignorama, 2006; public conVENience, 2006; and yudangami, 2009.

I'm not sure if anyone actually reads this blog anymore, but anyway--great job today, by the very very end of the day it seemed to finally look like everything is going to work out! The studio is slowly taking form as a gallery space, but we still have lots to do tomorrow.

I was extremely impressed today with your meeting. Also, with this blog as well. Many of you write better direct to the blog perhaps than to your reflective journals?

For this reason, I think you should consider printing your written, contributed posts (yours, not others, of course) that you have made to this blog, as these show ongoing and critical reflection/evaluation, and in terms of the evolution of the wall, detailed planning as well.

We won't be able to assess direct from the blog, so hard copy it will need to be. Only print stuff from the beginning of Unit 7 (and edit if necessary). Bring these to the Friday session

Hair and fur used in Gulf of Mexico oil clean-up

France, UK, Spain, Brazil, Australia, Canada and the US are taking part
Hairdressers, pet groomers and farmers worldwide are collecting hair and fur to help mop up the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The hair, stuffed into nylon tights, helps booms soak up thick oil spewing from the blown-out well off Louisiana.
About 370,000 salons are taking part, said the charity organising the massive "hair lift". Matter of Trust is largely co-ordinating its efforts via Facebook.
Some 450,000lbs (204,000kg) of hair and fur is said to being arriving each day.
Hair is an extremely efficient material for taking in all kinds of oils including petroleum, Matter of Trust's co-founder Lisa Gautier told the BBC's World Today programme.
She explained that each follicle has an enormous surface area, which the oil "sticks" to.

Volunteers have been stuffing the nylons with hair at 15 warehouses close to the disaster zone, making huge "hairy sausages" or booms, she said.
The booms will be laid on beaches rather than out at sea, soaking up any oil that washes ashore.
The technique has been backed by the Applied Fabric Technologies, the world's second largest oil boom manufacturer.
Ms Gautier said donations had come from France, England, Spain, Brazil, Australia, Canada and the US, and that new volunteers were signing up all the time. There are constant updates on shipments on the charity's Facebook page.
Alpaca and sheep farmers have also got involved, according to the San Francisco-based charity.
Oil has been escaping at a rate of 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) a day since 20 April, after an explosion on a BP-leased rig.

You may have seen the model that I've created, though it doesn't really do much justice--but what I'm creating is a life-size woman, who appears to be emerging from the wall.

She's meant to be a direct product of our environment, as the appearances, cosmetically, of women tend to be. She is to be positioned from a mannequin--retaining all of the features that such an industry acknowledges as being "ideal"--though she will not be clothed, she will be covered entirely in carefully trimmed articles upon which I've been collection the face transfers of other people's cosmetic processes. The head of the mannequin has been intentionally left out--to suggest that the effects of cosmetics on a woman being more of an epidemic beyond what ones face contains.

The doll I've used for the model isn't capable of moving, so it isn't an ideal indicator of what the piece will probably be.

This, if done as planned, will take up the entire wall which I have marked on our chart. So far, no one has approached me with a dispute--though I am more than willing to negotiate, but this must be done soon, as I am planning to begin building on the wall either late Monday or Tuesday.

I'm not 100% sure what this will turn out to be, but I'm just going to take it and run...

Robert's plan

Hi again,

As you can see in the general studio plan, my piece is going to be two standing poles with several cylinders of clay around them. The poles are 180 cm high and they will probably go on a very low plinth (10 cm high x 100 cm wide x 50 cm deep).

I'd like people to be able to walk around them, that's why I've placed them in the middle of the room next to where my table is now. Hope that's still ok with everyone.

Hi everyone.

Thank you Caroline for putting up those dates and notices. I have had to work out of London this week so that was really helpful.

Regarding the show, I am going to have that large piece of paper (on my desk) some how pinned, nailed or bulldog clipped to the board covering the window above Toms desk. There is a possibility that there will be another 1 or 2 pieces hung with it. If possible I would prefer nothing to over lap on to the board (apart form J's work). Also it would be great if there was a clear view from the door by Stephanie's desk, so the piece can be seen from a distance, and nothing directly under it so it can be seen close up. How does that fit with you guys, I hope it is not too demanding?!

Hello team sculpture!

After yesterday's talk, I thought it be a good idea to put dates/notices and such on here for all to view--especially for those of you who haven't been coming to the studio frequently.

Monday, May 10th: Submit your plinth requirements by 4PM today / afternoon Risk Assessment. EVERYONE MUST BE PRESENT.

Tuesday, May 11th: We must clear the space of most tables and all things that aren't relevant from here on out. Also, we should clean up the walls--remove the infinite amounts of white tack, fill holes, etc...

As far as painting goes, hopefully we can knock that out on either Wednesday or Thursday. It has been proposed that we do this after workshop hours--so that those using them can maximize their time up there.

Remember, the more people who are in the studio in the coming weeks, the more motivated we'll all be to work and put on an outstanding show, so do us all a favour and come in!

DEADLINE FOR HANGING: MAY 20TH AT 4PM--before then we really ought to clean the floor, as we'll have to put all of our work on it for assessment, perhaps this'll take place on Wednesday PM?

If you haven't decided on a space in which to present your work, you may want to consider doing this very soon--spaces are quickly being claimed. Come in and chart it on the wall ASAP.

ALSO--so that we're all on the same page, it might not be a bad idea for everyone to write a post on this blog detailing what they're planning on doing (like what we did for the ROOM project). It'll be a hell of a lot easier to sort everything out if we're all informed.

Magnificent Maps at the British Library, NW1
Maps are the precursors to the landscape paintings that flourished after the 17th century. They are works of art

The art of map-making is an ancient one. It’s hardly surprising: over the centuries, as cartographers crept their slow way across the surface of the planet, the pictures that they created helped people to fit the myriad scattered fragments of a sprawling geographical puzzle into place. But, as the face of the world has grown ever more familiar, have we come to think of the map merely as a literal translation? Accurate, objective and useful it may be but where, many may wonder as they anticipate the British Library’s latest exhibition, is the creative flare that can turn a dry topographical record into a fertile territory for imaginative exploration?

Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art is a show to overturn such expectations. It leads the visitor — a bit like some erstwhile explorer — on a creative adventure around the back of that flat piece of paper we think of as the world. Drawing on the finest collection of maps on this planet — the British Library has more than four million to choose from, the vast majority of which are only very rarely, if ever, put on public display — the exhibition sets out to make clear that these pictures are about far more than mere physical description. They are a series of subjective images, each shaped by the beliefs and desires, the ambitions and prejudices, the passions and anxieties of its period.

The spectator looks at the world from myriad perspectives. “Which is more important — the Last Judgment or the correct placement of Birmingham?” asks the curator Peter Barber who, even in the 30 years that he has worked at the library, has probably managed to examine barely a third of its collection. What tells you more about a country: a picture of a dog-headed cannibal or a description of its coastline? The visitor is invited to wander through a world before it was charted, into lands where the unknown is as vivid as the observable fact.

Nothing is fixed — not even magnetic North. The show is not chronological. Wall texts are minimal. There is no audio guide. Rather, rambling through sections that set out to conjure the sort of spaces in which maps would once have been displayed from the splendid audience rooms of boastful rulers to the private “cabinets” of the educated, the spectator is encouraged to discover the complex variety of purposes maps have been made to serve.

The map comes in all shapes and sizes and forms, from Queen Mary’s dolls-house miniature to the massive 17th-century Klencke Atlas, which stands taller than a man. Here is the world captured in eye-confounding monochrome mazes, in glowing watercolour pictures and richly-gilded charts, in rare surviving fragments of once far larger carvings, in medals and globes and manuscripts and tapestries.

There are maps (or precious surviving fragments of them) from the medieval era when the mystic and philosopher Hugh of St Victor declared the world to be like a book written by the finger of God, including a vividly coloured replica of the Hereford Mappa Mundi (the original is never lent): a complex knot of earthly marvels that bear testimony to the power of their divine maker. Alongside it hangs a contemporary version by the artist Grayson Perry, in which the rays of light that illuminate mere terrestrials stream from his sphincter in the middle of the picture.

Maps, as this show makes plain, are art works. It does this most directly when it hangs a cartographical commemoration (complete with all the gory details including pillage, hangings and torture) of the 1625 surrender of the besieged town of Breda to the Spanish alongside an image of a Velázquez painting of the same subject. Maps follow the prevailing styles of the period, from the Baroque extravaganza of a chart of Bohemia to the meticulously observed records of a pupil of the 18th-century map-maker Paul Sandby. Maps are the precursors to the landscape paintings that flourished after the 17th century.

But their artistry serves a purpose. Far from objective, scientifically created records, these images have an imaginative agenda. Together they tell a story of power, plunder and possession. They are made to keep watch over spreading dominions, to assert forceful ownership or project a sense of civic pride. Maps — from the medieval visions of a king as a godlike power to the blatant posters of the Bolsheviks — serve as propaganda. The more ornate, the more striking, the more pleasing they look, the more persuasive and easily swallowed their message becomes.

A watercolour of Dover harbour illustrating proposed plans for the prevention of erosion need not have been so delicately accomplished. But this map was dispatched to Privy Counsellors who, if so inclined, would put up the money for improvements. The counsellors were far more likely to find the money if the image appealed.

This is a show to be interpreted at a deep cultural level. The more closely you examine the objects, the more you find yourself embroiled in the ambitions and intrigues of their subtle worlds. Maps, this show argues, are as much to do with philosophy as geography. They are not two-dimensional pictures of the world but windows on to a subtle and complex world view.

Welcome back all

Time to get the blog up and running again?
This really is a must see show. Not open Monday, perhaps we might go as a group on Tuesday.

Jannis Kounellis, at 74, remains the patriarch of an Italian art movement that has long since slipped away, though brevity was always a part of its nature. The radical gestures of arte povera – flame throwing, horse wrangling, missile straddling – were as short-lived as the humble materials the artists used, such as ice, bread, newsprint, flowers and lettuce that wilted even as you watched. This was a 60s art, it seemed, that would never grow old or repeat itself.

Yet Kounellis has achieved both. Born in Greece in 1936, he moved to Rome aged 20 and has lived and worked there ever since. Repetition has gradually become his modus operandi. Not the exact reproduction of one work, however, but, rather, the conception of each separate piece as a kind of chorus, reiterated over and again, to the larger elegy of his work.

Burlap sacks, beans and lentils, empty bottles, stones and coal: if you saw the gallery recently devoted to Kounellis at Tate Modern you will be familiar with most of his stock, the inventory of dry goods from which he makes his dark and plangent works. There are variations – coffee, piano music, very occasionally paint (he started out as a painter) – but Kounellis is faithful to his repertoire of uningratiating materials. Each time you see one of his grain sacks or dry-stone walls, you are reminded of all that went before: plain things, universal, ancient and yet unarguably modern.

In Ambika P3, the vast underground bunker beneath the University of Westminster, Kounellis has found the ideal gallery. Acres of bare concrete rising up to cathedral height, the former engineering hall is both desolate and inspiring. The artist has filled this space with one colossal installation and many smaller works that feel like further meditations on the theme.

The central work is overwhelmingly dramatic: immense steel walls diverging through the concrete gallery, each supported by a steel table and each forming a substrate for the most haunting configurations of glass bottles, meat hooks, tensile cords and black overcoats pinioned like dead or dying bodies. What first strikes is the sense of a whole gallery of martyrdoms combined – compressed – into a single work.

But as you walk down one avenue, a particular panel may suddenly take on the glow of a stained-glass window as the light catches the green and sepia of the empty bottles. Or the funereal clothes may be arranged in a manner more reminiscent of flags or revolutionary banners. The silver meat hooks are by turns bleakly functional or rococo in their curlicues. Everything you look at feels unfixed, no matter how solemn and still – a stream of proliferating associations.

And like avenues, these walls are directional – down one side, up the other, into a tight convergence in the middle. It feels like a vast cross; in fact, as the viewer eventually discovers, it takes the form of a letter K. An outsize signature, presumably it is also an allusion to Kafka's character who can never penetrate the bureaucracy of the castle, still less its walls. That allusion shouldn't be overstated, though, since Kounellis has created his own mysterious edifice, its fortifications topped with heaps of coal.

You become a wanderer, trying to get to the heart of it all – and what's going on in your mind is translated in the most physical terms. Hooks, coats, bodies, bottles: traces of humanity, of labour and pain, of the solitary worker in the industrial machine. It feels like a game of word association played out in objects and images, or knowledge encrypted, waiting to be revealed if one only had the key. The experience is powerfully affecting and theatrical. Kounellis has designed sets for Heiner Müller and the Berliner Ensemble. The wrangled horses were his, tethered live in a Roman gallery. And the smaller works dispersed among the pillared halls have the presence of characters escaping the main performance to speak for themselves.

A descent from the cross, in which the overcoat is dangling upside down, person and winding sheet all in one; a jacket wrapped around itself, huddled, confused and lashed by steel wires whose hard glint is reflected over and again in the clear glass of the bottles; frozen air in a cold-hearted world.

The effect stops short of bathos every time because the decisions are so well judged. Just the smallest adjustment – barely perceptible – in an arrangement of bottles introduces a threat of danger, just as the angle of a garment can make it seem more or less human or abstract.

And in the end, despite the accumulation of so many objects – hung, strung, stockpiled, stacked – the sense is of looking at paintings by other means. Portrait, still life, history painting, battle scene: the installation is like an art gallery made abstract.

"My focus is to present, not to represent," Kounellis has said. No matter how complex or unfathomable the works may seem, their elements remain irreducibly simple. A dozen black overcoats hanging on hooks exceed the obvious anthropomorphism – garments as people – to evoke some distant age of dignified men going to their deaths. An old black sewing machine dangling from a wire and you might sense the hot dusty village and the soldiers hammering at the cottage door.

Clearly, each viewer will have their own associations, but there are fundamental overtones here of our European past. Kounellis has found a way of rearranging his repertoire of objects differently in each location to maximise the emotional impact. Here, he has made an industrial-scale elegy that speaks to the site as a deserted construction hall. Imagine what this Greek poet might produce for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern.

Alice Anderson's Time Reversal

This is one worth seeing! Alice Anderson (Beaux Arts/Goldsmiths graduate) has translated her childhood reality/fantasy/dreams into one incredible body of work. She's showing a mix of installation, sculpture, photography and video.

It's at Rifle Maker--which if you've never been there, it's quite an interesting space, it's old, slightly disheveled and truly feels like you're invading somebody's abandoned home.

Sculpture trip - The plan (trains, times and all)

Robin and a friend are coming to Yorkshire Sculpture Park too. Numbers are going up...

Here's the plan:

Meet at Kings Cross at 5 to 8 in the morning (that's 7:55 am) to catch the 8:10 train to Wakefield Westgate (WKF). (It's a bit early, I know, but just imagine the fresh morning air in your nostrils, reminding you that you're alive and ready to embrace the beauty of sculpture and the mystery of material truth).

You can buy train tickets here. Not cheap (British rail is well pricey) but good news is that the sculpture park is free.

The train journey takes 2 hours and once we get there we can share a £10 cab ride to the park or get there by bus and feet.

We'll probably get there around half ten, so we can make the most of their short opening times (10am to 5 pm). We can get the 18:17 pm train back, after a nice pint in a local pub.

I'm buying my train ticket right now. The quickest you do it, the cheaper it is.
It's going to be a great day out. By the way, we can picnic on the grounds (semi-lying next to your favourite sculpture).

This is Emmeli Person, the new Person in the scupture block, now making my first addition to this blog. And it's about something as grand as Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Me and Robert are planning to take a daytrip to Wakefield visiting the Yorkshire Sculpture Park on, a hopefully sunny, wednesday the 24th of March, so precisely a week from now.

I am sculptor creating large 3D installation with found photographs. I am looking for 2 assistants to help me with the realization of 3D models between the 20th and 22nd March and the 27 - 28 March (availability does not need to be all these days) for a new project. The work would consist of helping me to cut out some photographs, while I create the models. The work is volunteer-based, although I will cover travel expenses, and will provide lunch, tea and biscuits. I am also happy to write a reference letter when needed in the future.

HENNING BOHL: CORNER OF A CORNFIELD at CUBITT: OPENS FRIDAY

Henning Bohl's practice explores traditions, conventions and their limitations in making and displaying art. Working on primed canvas with a restricted palette of coloured paper, he produces collages that recombine elements from a lexicon of graphic motifs. These pictures refer to both painting and sculpture. They function as ‘props’, resembling theatrical scenery. Works are often stacked or leant in a manner that acknowledges their temporary occupation of the space. His installations frequently operate against the architecture of the gallery, creating obstructions or interruptions and directing paths.

Bohl's exhibition takes its title from a nineteenth century landscape painting by William Davis. Once referred to as ‘loving depictions of utterly insignificant subjects,’ Davis’s compositions are oddly prosaic in comparison with the more intense work of his Pre-Raphaelite peers. A hunting scene entitled View from Bidston Hill (1865) depicts a distant figure on horseback and a hare in the foreground almost camouflaged within the heath. This discreet treatment of the hunt caused one critic to describe the hare as ‘an eccentric intrusion.’

Bohl's title refers to Davis’s tendency to invert perspective and reduce conventional points of focus to marginal details. This shift in emphasis is echoed by Bohl's decision not to hang pictures on the existing walls but construct temporary architecture for the exhibition in the centre of the space. His installation takes the form of a three-dimensional composition employing a modular structure bearing two new collage works. Bohl's construction employs sculpture that takes the form of tables with surfaces made from plasterboard, transferring the vertical white planes of the gallery to a tiered, horizontal format.

This will be Henning Bohl's first solo exhibition in the UK.

"Cyprus is a metaphor to me and I don’t see it as part of my identity, at least not in any traditional sense of the word, where identity refers to the past. Cyprus as a metaphor refers to the future and while the future is not known, not preordained, as a metaphors it is still distinctly recognisable and symbolises more than just sameness. That is more than the sameness between Greek Cypriots and Greece or Turkish Cypriots and Turkey. If my identity were to be Cypriot, it would only be Cypriot, as is this walking stick.

The Cyprus problem is one of many examples of divided communities across the globe but unlike Palestine or Northern Ireland, it is not a religious conflict. I suppose I make a point of this because it is a positive aspect to the problem and it may be a reason why a solution could be found. Religion is deeply rooted in the past and the past can’t change, especially if your identity and your past are the same thing. But when your identity is more like a metaphor then you are rooted in the future.

Maybe I am clutching at straws here but I felt I needed to make these points before another Greek or Greek Cypriot comes and slaps me on the back, shouting, “Ré Malaka! Are you Greek?” Or if no Turkish or Turkish Cypriot decides to come to the show because they see the ‘Papa’ before the ‘savva.’"

Savvas will be will be coming to the Foundation FA Sculpture studio to present his work and experience.

...I'm not encouraging anyone to take this as a role model for being a professional artist...after all, this is three quarters of a century down the line for most of you...even so, quite a touching article and idea of what being an artist is about.

Five years ago, some of my canvases were included in an exhibition in New York showcasing female g eometric painters. There was an element of chance involved – a good friend put my name forward when one of the other artists dropped out. A collector bought five of my pieces, the first I had sold. I was 89 years old; I had been painting full-time for more than 60 years.

Over the decades I had occasional exhibitions and good reviews, but never sold a painting. The type of work I was doing simply wasn't fashionable. There were knock-backs, too, such as a gallery owner who loved my work but wouldn't show it, because I was a woman. Benign neglect, I call it – there was never any malice intended. I suppose I was a little bit ahead of my time and paid for it.

Perhaps if I'd been more a ggressive things might have worked out differently, but for me, the work was everything. Recognition and money have never been an issue, painting is simply my vocation.

In 1939, when I met my husband in my native Cuba, I was studying architecture. I had done some sculpting, but after I married Jesse, an English professor, and moved with him to New York, my priorities shifted. I started training at New York's Art Students League, but wasn't satisfied. It was all so academic, and though I felt there was something I needed to express, I wasn't finding a way to do it. It wasn't until we spent some years living in Paris after the war that I made the discovery that was to change the course of my life.

Browsing through some bookstalls on the banks of the Seine, I came across something I simply hadn't known existed. Every two years, Le Salon des Réalités Nouvelles had an e xhibition of practically every geometric or minimalist artist in Europe. I opened a catalogue of one and was floored by some of the images I saw. I i mmediately knew this was the path I wanted to take.

I had to change my way of thinking and feeling about painting, and reject everything I'd been taught. I gave up representational art entirely and started working in the abstract. It was a struggle, but an interesting struggle. I worked very, very hard, and little by little, over many, many years, I came to find my own voice.

Jesse was endlessly supportive and one of the very few people who understood what I was aiming at. Poor man – I inflicted a lot of difficulties in his life. We had to move to neighbourhoods that were cheap but sometimes a little dangerous so I could have a big enough place to paint, and he did this with a lot of grace. I had a secure existence. We had no children, so once Jesse left for work in the morning I'd get any necessary housework out of the way and then paint for hours. Many talented people drop out of art because they can't afford to do it, which is terribly sad. I was a very lucky woman. Even after Jesse died, in 2000, I carried on. I had no choice – my work really needed to come out, it was a necessity, as well as a pleasure.

After those first paintings were bought in 2004, word spread quickly and other pieces were sold. I was in shock for days. Now I have pieces in collections all over the world. Yet perhaps it's been a good thing I was able to work for so many years without recognition. I was left alone to refine and distil my art for decades, paring things down to their essence. I have no regrets, no complaints, and my work is more important to me than ever. I'm not as well as I would like to be, but as soon as I b egin painting all my aches and pains disappear.

I don't know how I would have reacted if I had been more successful when I was young. Now it's nice, and I have more money than I could ever have imagined earlier in my life. Yet I'm not overwhelmed by it at all. I've always been a private person, and my work is my private life – I'd resent it if I felt people were intruding when I was trying to paint. But it is very pleasant to be recognised a little bit – I've made it on to the cover of the New York Times without having to kill anyone. All I had to do was get old. The world came to me eventually – I just had to wait 94 years, that's all.

Consume Peckham: 18 films, is a collaborative film project between 18 businesses and 57 students from Chelsea College of Art and Design. The films take a fresh look at the complex relationships between culture and commercialism in Peckham, as seen from the point of view of young people unfamiliar to the area. With guidance and support from mentors the students have been encouraged to integrate themselves into the community and take a deep approach to research in order to gain trust from the businesses they are seeking to understand.

We observe the mundane and the poetic in the day to day routine of Ozzie’s Café; we witness the preparation of a traditional Pakistani goat stew, we seek to understand why Peckham needs a Persian corner shop, Seen together, the 18 films build up a multifaceted documentary portrait of Peckham revealing tangled cultural, social and economic relationships. The films ask if the abundance of diversity in such a confined space can create a utopia; or if divisions and differences create tensions that cannot be bridged.
